Solidarity from the South: The World Social Forum declares its support to BDS and to the Palestinian people

In January, the Brazilian cities of Porto Alegre and Canoas received the Thematic Social Forum whose theme chosen was “Capitalist Crisis, Democracy, Social and Environmental Justice". The event, an icon of the altermundism and of the anti-neoliberal, anti-colonialist and anti – imperialist struggle, is a space for global civil society to organize itself and to debate the global social-political agenda.

In 2014, as in previous editions, various groups and movements of the civil society from Brazil and from all over the world attended the forum. Amongst them, the Palestinian Grassroots Campaign Against the Apartheid Wall – Stop the Wall was present.

In this year, chosen as the Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, the Final Assembly of Social Movements highlighted its support to the cause and to the BDS campaign, and during the closing statement, it declared: "We shall intensify the fight against the repression of the peoples and the criminalization of protests and social movements worldwide. We shall strengthen the ties and weapon of solidarity between peoples, strengthen the global movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel and demand the immediate establishment of a free state of Palestine".

The Stop the Wall delegation will continue its tour in South America. With meetings arranged in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, Stop the Wall will be promoting the campaign for the 10 years decision of the International Court of Justice and against the free trade agreement between Israel and the Mercosur bloc. In January, the Brazilian cities of Porto Alegre and Canoas received the Thematic Social Forum whose theme chosen was “Capitalist Crisis, Democracy, Social and Environmental Justice".
