Weekly Stop the Wall Repression Update

Scope: Repressive measures against Palestinian human rights defenders active against the Wall and the settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Period: Monday 19 to Monday 26 April 2010 

Summary:

 1) Arrests of HRDs

  • Arrests occurred in the south of the West Bank, in Bethlehem and Hebron districts. A 13 year old boy is currently held in Ofar prison.

2) Violence against HRDs

  • The most grave use of disproportionate and unnecessary use of violence by the IOF has occurred in Bil’in, where 43 year old Imad Rizqa, Palestinian citizen of Israel has been hit directly by a tear gas canister fired not in the air but in the  crowd and is hospitalized with fractured skull and brain haemorrhaging. Two journalists have been injured as well in Bil’in.

  • Beit Ummar has seen again a high level of violence.

  • The UNESCO Chair on Human Rights, Democracy, and Peace at an-Najah National University has published a report on the deaths of Usaid Abd Qadus (19) and Muhammad Ibrahim Abdel-Qadr Qadus (16) in Iraq Burin on 20 March 2010, considering them cases of wilful killing and a war crime. It calls upon the international community to take appropriate action.

3) Collective punishment

  • The Thursday night raids at the home of Mohammad Brijiyeh, al Ma’sara, have discontinued after the presence of the diplomatic community in the area on Tuesday.

  • In Beit Ummar settlers have wilfully destroyed over 70 dunum of agricultural land as a form of collective punishment for the people.

  • No exceptional cases of collective punishment have occurred.

Date of arrest: Friday April 23 2010

Name: Iyad Al Alami, 23 years

Circumstances: taken during protest; released later during the night.

 

Place: Tuqu, Bethlehem district:

Date of arrest: Saturday April 24 2010

Name: Ahmad Salem Sabah, 13 years

Circumstances: Ahmad is now at Ofar prison accused of throwing stones.

 

Place: al Walaja, Bethlehem district:

 

Date of arrest: Sunday April 25 2010

Name: Haitham al Atrash, 25 years

Date of arrest: Sunday April 19 – 26 2010

Name: Mo'tasim Hajajla, 25 years, Mohammad Hajajla,17 years, Rami ad Darras,19 years, Amjad ad Darras, 20 years

All of the detainees have been released again within the week.

 

Releases

 

Sabti Khawaja, 21 years, from Ni’lin was released on April 24 2010. He had been arrested on February 2 2010.

 

Mahmoud Nafi’e, 19 years,  from Ni’lin was released on April 24 2010. He had been arrested on February 2 2010.

Place: Bil’in, Ramallah district:

Date of injury: Friday April 23 2010

Name: Imad Rizqa, 43 years, from Yafa

Type of injury: fractured skull and brain haemorrhaging

Circumstances: shot in the head by one of the tear gas canisters fired not in the air but directly at the protestors.

Further injuries: photographers Abbas Momani, 34, and Haitham Khatib, 34, were hit in the leg with rubber bullets; Um Samara, 48, was hit in the back; and Majd, 22, and Dawr, 27, were both hit in their legs wit rubber bullets. Italian activist was hit in the hand with rubber bullets.

 

Place: Beit Ummar, Hebron district:

Date of injury: Saturday April 24 2010

Name: Ahmad Ayyad, 14 years

Type of injury: burns

Circumstances: shot at with a sound bomb.

Further injuries: 5 people had to be treated in the hospital.

The UNESCO Chair on Human Rights, Democracy, and Peace at an-Najah National University has published on findings with regard to the facts and circumstances related to the death of Usaid Abd Qadus (19) and Muhammad Ibrahim Abdel-Qadr Qadus (16) from the village of Iraq Burin (Nablus Governate) on Saturday 20 March 2010.

The report affirms that the incident is a case of wilful killing and a grave breach of the IV Geneva Convention, which amounts to a war crime. 3) Collective Punishment

Damage of property

Place: Beit Ummar, Hebron district

Date: Wednesday April 21 2010

Circumstances: Sewage water flowing from three open tubes of wastewater plant in the Kfar Etzion settlement has destroyed some 70 dunums of vineyards in the valley of ash-Shakheet, which belongs to the village of Beit Ummar. Villagers consider this wilful destruction of their land a form of collective punishment meted out against them by the settlers.

Closures

 

The military orders against Ni’lin and Bil’in, declaring the areas between the built-up area and the Wall a closed military zone is still in act.
